 STUDIO ASSISTANT/ APPRENTICE STONE CARVER 

JOB DESCRIPTION

Andrew Wilson Smith Sculpture Studio is seeking a full-time studio assistant to aid in the fabrication of sculptures in a variety of materials including clay, plaster, and stone. The job will incorporate various methods of traditional craftsmanship. Ongoing training in these disciplines will be provided by experienced sculptor and stone carver, Andrew Wilson Smith. Responsibilities will vary by project. The ideal candidate is a quick learner who is adaptable to a dynamic work environment, excited about gaining new skill sets, likes to work hard, and is interested in a career in the fine arts.

Successful candidates are expected to carry themselves professionally, be productive, be detail-oriented, and take pride in their work. This entry-level position is ideal for a young person who is hungry for knowledge and experience in fine arts and craftsmanship, wants to work with their hands, and is enthusiastic about the kinds of projects undertaken in this studio.

SKILLS

No particular experience is required, but ideal candidates will have some experience and proficiency in a construction trade and/or experience or interest in the fine arts. No formal degree is required. It is expected that the assistant will be trained on the job in the specific skills necessary for the work undertaken in the studio, especially traditional methods of stone carving.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Travel occasionally to assist with art installation projects, should enjoy traveling and be able to work comfortably in construction site situations, including from lifts and platforms when necessary

  • Live in or near South Bend, Indiana or be willing to relocate to the area

  • Have a valid driver’s license

  • Be at least 18 years old and have graduated from high school

  • Be able to work independently and follow directions closely

  • Be able to stand for long periods of time

  • Lift and manipulate loads that are up to 50 pounds without excessive difficulty

  • Be willing and able to follow safety protocols

PAY

  • Starting pay depends on past experience and skill sets applicable to the position

  • Regular pay increases based on job performance

About the Studio

Andrew Wilson Smith Sculpture Studio has been operating since 2006 as an independent fine art design and fabrication studio. The company offers a variety of services to institutional and private clients and primarily serves Catholic churches and other religious organizations. Typical projects include decorative sculpture, architectural sculpture, statuary, portraiture, and mosaic artwork. Materials include plaster, stone, bronze, tile, and other media. Andrew Wilson Smith was trained at The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art and the Florence Academy of Art and has served several apprenticeships with prominent sculptors. Smith lives with his wife and their three children in South Bend, Indiana.
