A coat of arms, or armorial bearing, was designed in the past to identify a person, family or community, whether on the field of battle, in competition, in ceremony, or in the market place. Heraldry was the complex language of describing the arms in image and word. Through the heraldic tradition the essence of a community’s aspirations and heritage was expressed for a larger public.
