Thomas More College of Liberal Arts is proud to announce that it is the new publisher of the St. Austin Review. The StAR is a Catholic culture and literature journal edited by author Joseph Pearce, Visiting Fellow and emeritus St. John Henry Newman Visiting Chair in Catholic Studies at Thomas More College.
“The St. Austin Review is almost alone in Catholic magazines still offered in print format,” commented President William Fahey. “By the grace of God and the tenacity of our friend Joseph Pearce, the thing lives! The StAR brings thoughtful readers of all sorts as well as writers—seasoned and green—to a safe harbor of word and art.”

Mr. Pearce remarked, “My own association with Thomas More College stretches back almost fifteen years. It’s my favorite of all the Newman Guide colleges for more reasons than I can enumerate. It is a true joy, therefore, that TMC has become the publisher of the St. Austin Review, which I have edited since its launch in September 2001.”
Reflecting on the journal’s beginnings, Mr. Pearce continued, “The StAR appeared as a shining presence in the cultural landscape in the month of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, that darkest of months. It continues to shine as the world again appears to be descending into darkness. It is needed as much as ever for the light it gives of God’s presence in the presence of beauty. I am deeply grateful and greatly encouraged that the journal will celebrate its 25th anniversary this September with my favorite college as its publisher.”
The StAR’s most recent issue on Shakespeare and Cervantes is a perfect example of how it engages with works studied in the TMC curriculum. The journal has often included contributions from the College’s faculty and staff (one example is this featured piece from Dr. Amy Fahey on Norwegian Catholic author Sigrid Undset).

Admissions Director Michael Yost ’18, who has had poetry published in the StAR, remarked, “Catholic literature has entered into a new era of popular revival, paralleled in importance and fervor only by the renewed interest that college and high-school students have developed in the Great Books, philosophy, theology, and the humanities: in short, the Liberal Arts. Both the St. Austin Review and Thomas More College share a dedication to the True, the Good, and the Beautiful; a dedication crowned by and grounded in the Catholic faith. We are looking forward to hearing the new voices of this revival in the pages of the StAR, as we listen attentively to the voices that are the source of that revival in the curriculum at TMC.”
“Thomas More College is honored to be a partner again with Joseph Pearce,” Dr. Fahey concluded. “Our mission now is to bring it to the attention of a larger and larger group of readers.”
