Yesterday, March 9, was the end of the program‘s Novena to St. Frances of Rome. Over the course of the day, several dramatic events have occurred. The Italian government has enlarged the quarantine zone to include the entire nation. Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has called for the suspension of all public ceremonies and gatherings. The Vicar General of Rome, Cardinal Angelo De Donatis, has announced the cessation of all liturgies in the City of Rome. News Media in Europe has reported that the government’s expansion of the quarantine zone was leaked a few hours before enforcement, and there has been movement outside of the northern quarantine zone.
On the evening of 9 March, Rome staff were contacted and after discussion, President Fahey authorized the closure of the Rome campus. All students must depart no later than Friday. Rome staff have assisted students to arrange flights to the United States. The Rome campus will close on Friday, March 13. The Rome Academic Program will continue by remote learning.
